Hi,
I would like to know if hp surestore 4/40 tape library support SNMP? I've checked the manuals but can't find even the word SNMP.
I find that there's plugin for HP OpenView available for download which enable the HPOV to manage the tape library, called TapeAlert plugin? Does it use SNMP or HP proprietary protocol?
Thanks,
Rico.

Re: surestore 4/40 tape library support SNMP?
The following SureStore library families do support SNMP: 1/9, 2/20, 4/40, 6/60, 10/100
The following are supported: MIB-2, TapeAlert traps, HP's Storage Element Manageability Interface (SEMI) 1.0, and HP's Trap Destination Table (also part of SEMI 1.0).
Two types of plug-ins are available: one freely downloadable, the other available from HP.
1. Below are links to where you can download free OpenView plug-ins for SureStore tape libraries. These plug-ins discover libraries, monitor status, configure trap destinations, decode TapeAlert traps, and allow launching of the RMC interface:
SureStorage 2/20 - 10/100 Library, OpenView Plug-in for Windows NT
http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/swdl.pl?c=co279&i=co279en
The plug-in is also available for HP-UX:
http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/swdl.pl?c=co291&i=co291en
...and Solaris:
http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/swdl.pl?c=co293&i=co293en
Finally, a similar plug-in is available for CA Unicenter TNG:
http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/swdl.pl?c=co294&i=co294en
2. HP's Enterprise Management Plug-ins are available from HP. See the following link for more information: http://www.hp.com/products1/storage/products/disk_arrays/modular/smartplugs/index.html
This plug-in package offers basic discovery, trap destination configuration, and device-specific application launching for a variety of storage devices including libraries, disk arrays, and NAS. Supported applications include OpenView, Tivoli, Unicenter, and BMC. Note that TapeAlert is not supported by this plug-in package.

Hi David,
Thanks for your answer. May I have more question? Do you know whether the SNMP for surestore 4/40 is enabled by default?? Where can I set the SNMP community? from the web administation interface?
Thanks,
Rico.

Solution
SNMP is automatically enabled for all libraries up to the 10/100.
Regarding SNMP community names: they can not be changed and default to "public". Reasoning for disallowing changes is as follows: The RMC card's SNMP Community names can not be changed by the user. This is not considered a security risk because no configurations can be changed via SNMP. That is, we supply a read-only interface. Further, no sensitive information can be gathered via the SNMP interface. If library integrity could be compromised via SNMP, we would adopt a much more strict security mechanism, since all SNMP community names are transmitted unencrypted over the wire. Changing a device's community name is not considered a reliable security precaution. For these reasons, we decided to make the SNMP community names static.
