Data Protection: Adopting a Data Protection for Virtualization

ScottBaker ‎11-25-2013 06:00 AM - edited ‎02-19-2015 12:50 PM

Fact – the sole purpose of backup is to facilitate recovery.

Fact – recovery operations exist to mitigate data loss.

Fact – the loss of data is not always the result of newsworthy event, many times it’s a result of those 10 digits of the user(s), generally speaking, clicking away on a keyboard that connects them to the infrastructure you’re trying to protect.

The simple truth is that we will never isolate our users from the infrastructure to the degree that we can 100% provide assurance that data will never be lost, nor can we place our datacenter in a bunker 1000 miles below the surface of the earth to prevent devastating effects from a natural disaster.  With the rampant growth of data and the constant utilization of virtualization technologies, how can you create a data protection strategy that provides you the level of protection you need while allowing your environment to remain dynamic and agile to grow with the demands of the organization?

There are certainly many ways we can approach that question, and when asked of me, I used an opportunity to share my thoughts in a feature article on Nov 2013 edition of the VMUG Voice Newsletter.  I’ll give you the gist of it – there are 3 approaches you can take:

  1. Understand the Business Requirements
  2. Protect Virtual Environments (and physical for that matter) based on Validate Business Requirements
  3. Data Protection Includes Data Recovery, Test the Recovery Process Often

These were the themes of the article and I spend time in each diving into the recommendations and considerations of each.  Feel free to visit my blog post or access the article, direcly.
