Data Protection: Application or Hypervisor - Who should own the backup operation?

ScottBaker ‎03-13-2014 07:29 AM - edited ‎02-19-2015 12:49 PM

Asking a direct question should result in a direct answer.  With a market like IT, offering an answer that’s anything other than “it depends” is a challenge.

Consider backup and recovery and the question of best approach.  You’ve likely heard it, you know that innocent question –what does your company recommend?  With options that include agents, agentless, agent-assisted, data protection integrations, file-based, host-based, hypervisor-based, array-based, in-guest, snapshots, clones, backups, disk-to-disk, disk-to-tape, virtual tape…the list goes on! It’s no wonder that a straight answer is nearly impossible and why so many IT administrators struggle with identifying the best backup approach.

I wave the banner proudly, declaring that the phrase “set it and forget it” has no place in backup and recovery conversations; rather, it should remain appropriately attached to Ron Pompeil’s Showtime Rotisserie Oven.

Now that we have the wheels turning, go ahead and add a layer of abstraction (hypervisors) and multiple backup vendors all positioning their product’s capabilities. It’s no mystery why there’s confusion around where the backup operation should occur.

So what’s the right approach?

Let me take a stab at something other than “it depends”, and do so in a vendor-agnostic way.  My goal is to provide this unbiased view to you, so that you can make the right choice for your environment as a result of conversations I was having internally on the very same subject.
