John-Sontag_web.jpgAn explosion of data, driven by the growth of ubiquitous sensing technologies and mobile devices, is pushing the limits of today’s data centers. How, then, should we be addressing that challenge to build the data centers of the future?

HP Labs’ John Sontag will offer some ideas in his presentation at HP Discover 2013 in Las Vegas on June Thursday June 13th, 2:00 – 3:00 pm.

Sontag is Vice President and Director of Systems Research at HP Labs, responsible for research into memristor, photonics, physical and system architectures, storage, and operating systems.

“I’ll be sharing HP Labs research into radical new approaches to the collection, processing, storage, and analysis of data that could enable a new generation of large-scale, high-performance infrastructure to support a data-centric world,” says Sontag.

Recent HP Labs research in non-volatile memory is laying the foundation for universal memory and energy-optimized systems-on-chips (SoCs), and advances in integrated photonics mean these systems will be able to communicate at the speeds that data-centric computing will require. In addition to outlining HP Labs’ research in these foundational technologies, Sontag will share HP Labs’ vision for software-defined systems that fuse memory and storage, flatten complex data hierarchies, bring processing closer to the data and enable system security at the point of attack.

Sontag is the former director of the HP Labs Strategic Innovation and Research Services (SIRS) group and, prior to that, its Technology Transfer Office. An expert in systems and operating system design and research, Sontag was previously the director of virtualization and data center architecture research at HP Labs, where the team focused on the architectural and operational impacts of virtualized servers, storage and networking, and the impact of high-density systems on data center design.
