Chandrakant-Patel_2_2012_we.jpgNext month Chandrakant Patel, HP Labs Chief Engineer, will offer “A glimpse into the future at HP Labs” at HP Discover 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I’ll be sharing how we look at emerging trends to understand where our industry—and our world—is headed,” says Patel. “I’ll also detail how we transform HP Labs ideas into innovations and work with our colleagues in HP’s business units to commercialize our work.”

As an example, Patel will highlight Labs’ transformation of the data center through innovations in power and cooling, microgrids, sensing and control, and energy efficient server design. Labs researchers are now re-inventing the data center once again to tackle the coming ‘data deluge’ – the result of connecting our physical and digital worlds into an ‘internet of things.’

“Today’s computing architectures will eventually be unable to keep up with this explosion of data,“ Patel argues. “I’ll show how that’s a huge challenge, but also a major opportunity.”

In the face of both, HP Labs is investigating “software defined IT” – a new computing paradigm, built on breakthrough research that changes the way we think about computing. Recent HP Labs discoveries are powering the development of universal memory and energy-optimized systems-on-chips (SoCs). And advances in photonic connections will let these systems communicate at the speeds that data-centric computing will require.

“Fundamentally, we’re asking how we can help our customers find the fastest, most secure and efficient route for gaining real value from their data,” Patel adds. “Our vision is to invent the new technology that will turn this massive amount of data into a real competitive advantage.”

Chandrakant Patel is a pioneer in microprocessor and system thermo-mechanical architectures, end-to-end energy management in IT, and applications for sustainable IT ecosystems. Also an HP Senior Fellow, he is widely recognized for his holistic, systemic and fundamentals-based approach to sustainability that has led to multiple innovations in chip and system cooling solutions.

If you are attending Discover, join us for this sneak peek into HP Labs' new research agenda and to hear more about HP Labs’ technology in action.

Discover attendees have two opportunities to hear Patel’s talk:

Wednesday, June 12th, 12:45 – 1:15 pm, in Discover Theatre #1

Thursday, June 13th, 12:45 – 1:15 pm, also in Discover Theatre #1
