Bill-Horne_web.jpgThe future of data security rests on our ability to mine enormous volumes of relevant data for otherwise hidden insights, believes HP Labs research manager Bill Horne of HP’s Security and Cloud Lab.

“The most difficult threats to deal with are ‘zero-day’ attacks, which by definition are threats that have never been seen before,” Horne explains. “Last year there were 30 million new strains of malware in circulation.  They are increasingly becoming undetectable by traditional ‘signature’ based detection methods.”

Horne will be offering a sneak peak at how HP Labs is working to detect such threats by analyzing data as it flows through modern information networks on June 12th at HP’s 2014 Discover event in Las Vegas.

The research, conducted in partnership with HP’s Global Cyber Security group, is based on analysis of HP’s own IT traffic. “We examine over 24 billion events per day on our network,” notes Horne. “I’ll be showing how careful analysis of that volume of data can yield security insights that you simply couldn’t get any other way. You can detect malicious behavior patterns, for example, without having to first know the specific characteristics of any attack.”

Horne will outline solutions developed by HP Labs that collect and analyze data such as DNS records to identify issues that need fixing. He’ll also share how these insights are being integrated into key technologies in HP Software’s portfolio, including ArcSight, TippingPoint, and Vertica.

The talk wraps up with a look at HP Labs research into visualizing data at this scale and at the potential for big data security research to impact IT operations. “People who manage DNS servers have had very little visibility into what their traffic looks like up to now,” Horne observes. “The insights we’re gaining, however, open up a surprising number of opportunities for them to optimize their traffic in new ways.”

Discover attendees can hear Bill Horne speak on June 12th, 12:00 to 12:30 PM, in the Discover Theater.
