Tomas_Sander_Headshot_web.jpgThe ‘good guys’ defending IT systems won’t be able to repel attacks from next-generation adversaries unless they get better at sharing threat information, believes HP Labs researcher Tomas Sander.

“Attackers are increasingly collaborating in underground, criminal ecosystems, and we need breakthroughs in sharing information about their behavior if we’re to regain the upper hand,” he suggests.

Sander will be previewing new HP technology, developed by HP Enterprise Security Products (ESP) in collaboration with HP Labs that promises just such a breakthrough in a June 11th talk at HP Discover in Las Vegas.

Threat Central is a collaborative forum for exchanging and analyzing information about hostile cyber-acts that lets businesses organize and leverage threat intelligence automatically, quickly, and effectively. “Even though companies are spending time and money combatting threats that other companies are also facing, they’ve been reluctant to share information about those attacks because that’s both sensitive information and because sharing is too cumbersome,” Sander notes. “Threat Central offers the community a way to crowd-source the creation of truly actionable threat intelligence while preserving appropriate anonymity and making sure the intelligence is both relevant and timely. Through analyzing the various data sources at the Threat Central backend and cross-correlating them with data from HP Security Research and HP’s threat intelligence partners we ensure the high quality of the data members receive.”

In his talk, Sander will explain how Threat Central works and offer a variety of use cases for the technology. He’ll also outline the advantages that a company of HP’s scale, experience and footprint can bring to creating a successful collaborative threat-intelligence solution.

“Lastly, I’ll talk about privacy and trust,” says Sander. “For this to work, you need trust in the community you are a part of and trust that the technology properly protects your data. We have a variety of technical and procedural enablers that justify trusting the platform.”

The technology, which will be generally available in 2014, will also be demoed at Discover by a team of ESP and HP Labs researchers, including Sander, at this demo station.

“I’m looking forward to meeting people in both venues,” Sander adds. “The challenge of automating information sharing has become a major issue for the entire industry, so it’s exciting to be able to share our thinking about how to address this – and to show how it’s shaping new developments in HP’s security portfolio.”

Discover attendees can hear Tomas Sander speak on June 11th, 10:30 to 11:00 AM, in the Discover Theater.
