Top technology trends for 2014

Commenting recently for on the 10 top tech trends for 2014 put forth by the IEEE Computer Society, Senior research manager at HP Labs and incoming IEEE CS President Dejan Milojicic said that "the year 2014 will mark a transition from hype to maturity and broader adoption of many promising technologies, such as Mobile Cloud services, Big Data analytics, Internet of Things, 3D printing, and MOOCs."

The annual list of tech trends published by the IEEE CS, one of the most prominent technical societies in the world, is always a good gauge of where the tech industry is headed.

Along with some of the more obvious trends that have garnered quite a bit of media coverage over the past year, like 3D printing, the Internet of Things and analytics for Big Data, the list calls out, for example, the need for the mobile infrastructure to "rise to the demands of consumers, businesses and first responders."

Scientific cloud computing is another trend that will have a noticeable impact on how science is conducted. It will be the key to solving the grand challenges stemming from the exponential growth of big datasets that need to be analyzed, stored and shared.

Finally, another interesting trend, the explosion of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) will require "a corresponding need for technology to support these new learning systems and styles."
