Hi
is there any way to specify which blades are candidates for shutdown when the OA determines an ‘Insufficient Power’ state?
Thanks
Garion..

Re: Exclude blades from shutdown when OA's determine - ‘Insufficient Power’
Greetings!
Garion, it depends on the settings which is made in the Power Management settings. Normally it depends which server is haveing more power consumption will shutdown.
Basically Power Management has 3 settings:
1. Redundant,
2. AC Redundant or Power Supply Redundant
3. Power redundancy is lost
More detailed informtion is available on the below link. Please refer to page # 83 shows this.

Re: Exclude blades from shutdown when OA's determine - ‘Insufficient Power’
Thanks for the quick reply..
our scenario is :
c7000 fully populated wiht BL465's 2 x 12core and 96gb, 2 x 145gb disks and Qlogic mezzanine cards.
6 PSU's 2400w with a N+N config.
10 fans
4 interconnect modules.
under this configuation if we lose one PSU, the OA's will then shutdown machines until the power load is under limit..
what we are wanting to do is say for blades in bay 1-14 yes you are ok to shut those down in the event of insufficient power.
Bay 15-16 - no - these must stay up..
regards
Garion.

SolutionHello Garion,
There is no settings available for this. This is all controlleed by OA. So, the possibility is which blade is consuming more power or utilizing more power during the error will be the target.

‘Insufficient Power’ is a KILLER SITUATION - no workaround (apart from redundancy and UPS)
Hi,
when there is not enough power, the power settings do not play any role when it comes to shutting down servers.
However, it MIGHT play a role when it comes to powering up servers.
Whenever there is not enough power - even for a short moment - any server, multiple servers or even all servers can/will crash. How could OA decide which server to shut down? And shutting down take some time. And when there is not enough power, how can you support a shutdown which takes at least 30 seconds?
So there SIMPLY IS NO controlled shutdown when there is not enough power. And there is no controlled shutdown of some systems in your car, when you run out of gas. It will simply STOP.
I have been playing around with this by pulling power supplies. I have done crazy things that nobody would do in a production environment. And I know how HP OA and blade servers behave in strange situations.
Best regards from Germany
