HP GbE2c mirror ports

I have been given a HP c7000 chasis with 10 blades and asked to create a test environment.

I am having issues creating a mirror port to replicate traffic between 2 blades onto another blade on a 3rd port

I have gone into the configuration and set ports 1 and 2 to mirror to port 5 in both directions.

running wireshark on the blade on port 5 shows no replication.

at first i thought this was due to ESXi but building the OS directly onto the blade hardware has not solved this issue.

I have set 2 NICs on the monitoring blade, 1 with and 1 without IP settings.

Can anyone help me with this issue?

-Thanks in advance

Re: HP GbE2c mirror ports

what does your port mirroring config look like?

did you "apply"?

/c/pmirr/mirror ena
/c/pmirr/monport 5
add 1 both
/c/pmirr/monport 5
add 2 both

Re: HP GbE2c mirror ports

I'll be honest... I've never even touched a blade chasis before never mind configured one... its all been a bit ad hoc - but worked so far :)

I did all the configuration through the web interface.

can you explain what you posted?

-Thanks

Re: HP GbE2c mirror ports

This looks to me like its a switch question not a blade question. What switches are in the blade enclosure?

Re: HP GbE2c mirror ports

- suggestion :
is the source-trafic vlan-tagged?
then on the destination it probably also is.
is the wireshark configured to accept tagged (=dot1q encapsulated) trafic?

- disable all filters in wireshark.

- could depend very much on the network card + driver.
we had a situation with two models HP laptops; one worked other didn't

Re: HP GbE2c mirror ports

Adrian: as mentioned in the subject we are using GbE2c switches (2 for redundancy)

I've tried setting up vLANs and that didnt work either.

At the moment I have gone back to the original setup of 1 flat vLAN with all servers on it.

I know this isnt a Wireshark issue as I've been using it for years. The stats from the NICs are not showing enough traffic so I know its not being forwarded.

Thoughts?

Re: HP GbE2c mirror ports

maybe trivial but did you "apply" the changes to the config?
