I think you may have a hardware RAID configured ...

Both disks are currently in use, none is empty.

If you have external storage, why not keep this config?
Believe me, replacing a SAS disk and restore the configuration could be a pain, but with your current setup it is just plug and play.

The disk is already in use unless you delete the whole array.
