Smart Array 6i - Battery failed after replacing three times

Hi at all,

I have some trouble with an DL380 G4.
After 3 1/2 jears of well working i got a message which says that the Cache Battery of the Smart Array 6i Controller failed. (at this moment there are running 3 identical DL380 G4, bought together)

Becouse of this problem i did an firmwareupgrade to 2.84 on all three servers.
As an result 2 Servers work fine but one Server mades problems further more.

The next step was to change the Battery.
At first it looks good becouse it was recharged but on next day the status was failed. OK, possibly the new battery could be bad, i changed it a second time.
Result was the same as before.

My question, becouse there is no waranty anymore, could someone give me some tipps to resolve the problem.

Thank you

Upgrade to latest firmware and latest PSP if the problem persists it seems like there is an issue with the array controller.. and it probably needs to be exchanged...

Re: Smart Array 6i - Battery failed after replacing three times

I had the same issue where we replaced the batteries and flashed the firmware. Our hardware servicer told us the cache module needs to be replaced as well as the battery. We did this on six on my servers (all with 6i controllers) and no issues since.

hello Bryan,
thanks a lot for your answer.
If you did this on 6 of your Servers, i think
this must be the solution of my problem.
Could you please give me the HP-Part-Nr?

I will try this out an give some feedback.

Thanks a lot

Re: Smart Array 6i - Battery failed after replacing three times

Hi All,

What i did on three DL385 G1 using SA 6i firmware v2.76, is to replaced the 128MB cache module + the battery.

Replacing the battery alone will indicate failed status after couple of hours or couple of days.

In addition, the so called faulty battery works fine with the new cache module.

Re: Smart Array 6i - Battery failed after replacing three times

Hi,
I have seen this issue got fixed after replacing the Smart Array 6i Cache with following part number:
413486-001 128 MB battery backed write cache (BBWC) module
The part number 413486-001 is new ROHS compliant part number of original part number 351518-001 Smart Array 6i Cache Module

I'm confident that this issue will be resolved after the battery and cache replacement.

Re: Smart Array 6i - Battery failed after replacing three times

Hi at all,

2 Days before i changed the cachemodul.
After this the system management homepage shows "Battery Status: Rechanging" and since yesterday it says "Battery Status: OK".

I think the problem must be solved.

Thanks to all for your help.
