Upgrading from 1/10G ENet to Flex10 modules (in c7000)

We have just performed this upgrade, so this is just some information for anyone contemplating the upgrade.

The procedure for upgrading from the old 1/10G VC Ethernet modules to the new Flex10 VC Ethernet modules proved to be pretty much as described in the documentation, however it was not totally uneventful.

Procedure.

1. Ensure that you have a backup of the current VC Configuration saved on disk in a browsable location.
2. Power down all of the servers in the enclosure.
3. Take note of the Default Password for the new VC module which is to be installed in Bay 1.
4. For each Ethernet Module,
a. Remove the old module.
b. Transfer the UpLink Cables from the old ports (1 - n) to the new modules, ports X1 – Xn. (X0, X7 and X8 are available for Stacking Links and should be left unused if possible) Note also that if you use Port X1 then the CX4 port is disabled.
c. Insert the new Flex10 Module
5. If your browser is open, clear the cache and close it.
6. Allow the new modules to finish powering up. This may take 3-5 minutes while the modules pick up their IP addresses from the OA.
7. Re-open your browser and connect to the VC module in Bay 1. (Make a note of the Firmware Version for future update, if required).
8. Login to the module in Bay 1 using the Administrator account and the default password (from the label)
9. Login should take you to the Domain Wizard, go ahead and import the Domain.
10. When the Import is complete, select Backup/Restore, and select your configuration file. Click on “Restore Configuration”
11. When the restore is complete, then the upgrade is complete. You should be able to log in to VCM using your previous username and password.

Note: The names of the uplink ports changed with the upgrade, from Port 1 – 8, to Port X1 – X8, so you will have to update assigned uplink ports in Ethernet Networks or UplinkSets.

Interesting Note: When the configuration is re-imported, it imports all existing Local Users and passwords. This includes the “Administrator” account, so the Administrator account password from the old Bay1 VC module is now the Default in the new VC module, (i.e. the password from the label no longer works.)

Thanks for posting, it's good to hear from someone who's done this first hand.

Re: Upgrading from 1/10G ENet to Flex10 modules (in c7000)

Hi Dave,

I am going to upgrade 1/10G from Bay 1 and Bay 2 to Flex 10 modules.

The instructions above are quite forward.

The uplinks on the current modules are in port 8.

Do I need to connect uplinks on the new modules or will the uplinks be internal?

Thanks,

John
