Using Cyclades / Serial connections with c-Class Blades

I have a customer that would like to use their Cyclades serial "aggregator" with the c7000/blades. They do this on ProLiant DL today but was not sure how this would work with c7000.

They cannot use the virtual serial port on iLO because they are trying to pull the Linux log files via serial/telnet/ssh.

Any thoughts on how this might be accomplished?

Anyone doing this today?

Thank you!

http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=USB+to+serial&meta=

if USB to serial supported with linux
customer can try dongle or internal USB security port

serial port at dongle has some limitation so is not guranteed that it will work

Re: Using Cyclades / Serial connections with c-Class Blades

Shawn, short answer is no. Strictly speaking, the c7000 doesn't have a serial port. The serial port(s) on the back of the system belong to the Onboard Administrator and that connection does not go past the OA itself.

A direct-to-blade serial connection can be established using the front-panel "SUV" (serial/USB/video) connector on each blade, but that is only designed to be attached temporarily; neither the dongle nor the connector can withstand permanent attachment.

It might be time for this customer to move past the 1950s and serial technology and embrace the 21st century. Linux log files are available online and only as the host is available--using an out-of-band method to retrieve these files is ill-advised anyway.

Can you share some of the supposed requirements that led the customer to the solution they are using today? The assumptions they made when they chose the architecture are probably no longer valid, whether on DL or on BladeSystem...
