Is iLO3 LAN bandwidth - 1GbE or 100 MbE?

Dan was looking to verify what network bandwidth was supported by iLO3:

I for some reason I thought iLO3 was always 1 GbE capable.

But now I’m thinking that the dedicated port is still only 100 MbE and only in a Shared Mode does it support Gig.

Is this correct?

From the DL580 G7 Quickspec

Integrated Lights-Out 3 (iLO 3)
Architecture        PCI Express based health and remote management ASIC

Processor            PCI Express RISC processor core running at 250MHz

Upgradeability   Option firmware upgradeable via Flash ROM.

Interfaces            One Ethernet Sideband connection (10/100/1000 Mb/s)

One Ethernet network connection (10/100Mb/s)

Dedicated iLO3 port supports only 100 Mbps.

You can configure iLO3 in shared (sideband) mode operation. This works at 1Gbps. Find below excerpts from iLO3 user guide. Refer from page # 55 to 57 for more information on configuring iLO3 in shared network port.

iLO 3 Shared Network Port

The iLO 3 Shared Network Port enables you to choose either the system NIC or dedicated iLO 3

Dedicated Management NIC for server management. When you enable the iLO 3 Shared Network

Port, both regular network traffic, and network traffic intended for iLO 3 pass through the system

NIC.

iLO 3 provides support for servers that might not have an iLO 3 Dedicated Management NIC. On

servers not using the iLO 3 Dedicated Management NIC, the standard hardware configuration

provides iLO 3 network connectivity only through the iLO 3 Shared Network Port connection. The

iLO 3 firmware detects the lack of an iLO 3 Dedicated Management NIC and automatically defaults

to the Shared Network Port. On some of these servers, an iLO 3 Dedicated Management NIC

might be available as a hardware option. If an iLO 3 Dedicated Management NIC is available

as a hardware option, iLO 3 defaults to the installed iLO 3 Dedicated Management NIC. On

servers using the iLO 3 Dedicated Management NIC, you can enable shared network port operation

through the iLO 3 interface.

The iLO 3 Shared Network Port uses the network port labeled NIC 1 on the rear panel of the

server. NIC numbering in the operating system can be different from system numbering. The iLO

3 Shared Network Port does not incur an iLO 3 performance penalty. Peak iLO 3 traffic is less

than 2 MB (on a NIC capable of 1000-Mb speeds), and average iLO 3 traffic is infrequent and

low.
