Onboard Administrator (OA) Hardware Versions and Firmware Sync/Update

Tobias was helping a customer with Onboard Administrator synchronization:

Hi,

A customer is asking an interesting question regarding OA hardware versions and firmware.

As I know it is supported to mix different OAs in one c7000 enclosure. So it is possible to mix the old OA with the DDR2 KVM-capable OA and different hardware versions (A1, A2, A3, B1).

Are there any additional steps or issues if you perform a OA firmware update in any combination of such a mixed OA environment?

The customer found in the OA User Guide the following statement:

To use the Synchronize Firmware feature, both Onboard Administrators must be running firmware version 2.10 or later, and both Onboard Administrators must have the same hardware version.

Does it mean that you must have the same type of OA (standard or DDR2 with KVM) or does it mean you need the same hardware version (A1, B1)?

What is the difference between OA firmware update process and the sync that makes it sync-incompatible?

Best Regards

Hello Tobias,
This statement:

"To use the Synchronize Firmware feature, both Onboard Administrators must be running firmware version 2.10 or later, and both Onboard Administrators must have the same hardware version."

Talks about the HW difference versus OA with and OA without KVM; it doesn’t correspond to the A/B revisions.

The OA with KVM has a new hardware architecture that makes it incompatible for the FW upgrade proces as a ‘sync’ feature from the OA itself.
