The basic difference between the Mellanox 544M and 545M based adapter is in the speed.

545 based adapter is capable of x16 PCI Gen3 speeds whereas 544 is capable of x8 PCI Gen3 speeds. Your bandwidth will be saturated if you use both the ports in 544 based adapter because the x8 interface can take a max of  8GB/s, whereas a single FDR port is capable of 56Gbps (say ~ 7 GB/s for discussion purpose) theoretical).

No such issues with 545 based card, since the x16 can take upto 16GB/s whereas the dual port FDR can pump a max of 2 x 56Gbps (say ~ 14 GB/s).

The chipset used in 544 is ConnectX-3 whereas in 545 it is Connect-IB.

Hope this helps.
