Hi
I have several ESX servers installed on G9 blades.
They all use Smart Array P244br to control raid with 2 disk.
They have a cache battery installed.
Now some cache batterys are broken and need replacement.
Server is RED in front and have battery error in IML log.
But since it's only ESX and they dont need cache, I would like to disable that part.
assume it means disable cache and battery.
Then I dont need to buy batteries and dont have red erros on front of server just because of battery.
Is that possible to run without cache and battery ?

Re: BL460c G9 remove cache and battery
It is possible.
but you can also use the cahche for read caching. this wil work without the batterij. you only are not allowed to use write cache

Re: BL460c G9 remove cache and battery
Do you know how?
Some setting to do in BIOS?
As it is now when just removing bad battery, I still have red blinking error in front on blade.

Re: BL460c G9 remove cache and battery
If you have installed the HPE tools in VMware ESX you can do it by command line, but i am not sure how
other option is to reboot the server and use the HPE SPP, you can start the Smart Storage Administrator and disable cache by GUI

SolutionThanks
I have removed battery and red light in front
Looked at cache manager.
it's disabled.
I have enabled and now red light is gone.
I could enable against the disk in raid or without disks. I choose with raid.
So thats the way I have to set up my ESX servers?
I thought cache was enabled and thas why it need battery.
So I think I just dont understnad the cache function
I assume I can still replace a faulty disk in my raid 1 and the new one will built up?
So what I do is removing battery from all my ESX servers and enable cache?

Re: BL460c G9 remove cache and battery
Hi, Yes it still will rebuild if you replace a failed disk.
but is is not possible to migrate to a different raid set (raid 5 for example)

Re: BL460c G9 remove cache and battery
No i saw that. but it doesnt matter.
This is only a ESX system running on disks and they are not surposed to migrate to any other raid.
All VM's is on storage.

Re: BL460c G9 remove cache and battery
Try to remove the battery and do an ILO factory reset.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
