Blade Workstation error when restoring an image with ghost

Blade Workstation error when restoring an image with ghost

I can create and restore an image on our XW460 blade workstations with no errors.

But after I restore an image and reboot, I get an error before windows even loads:

Attempting Boot from hard drive c:
A Disk Error occurred

Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to Restart

I am using a WinPE cd with Ghost 11.5.

I have tried this on 3 different blades.

Thanks

Re: Blade Workstation error when restoring an image with ghost

I'm assuming this error is coming from the controller? What is your disk configuration?

I'm also a little confused about your wording. You state that "I can create and restore an image on our XW460 blade workstations with no errors." But it appears you are getting errors...

Where are the *.GHO/GHS files stored? Are you getting any errors from Ghost?

Re: Blade Workstation error when restoring an image with ghost

Thanks for the reply...

1 hard drive on a Raid Controller E200 (I think)

Currently, my images are on a USB hard drive and I am just using a USB hub hooked to the dongle at the rack with the blades.

I create an image with ghost and it finishes with no errors.

I restore that image to another blade and it finishes with no errors.

When I reboot, I get the error. It seems to be an error from the blade and not windows..

Thanks

Re: Blade Workstation error when restoring an image with ghost

I'm wondering if there's some way you can validate the image. Can you try to load it onto another workstation with a similar chipset, just to see what happens? Or... Maybe boot to WinPE after you ghost the image onto the blade, and peruse the hard drive to see if everything looks right?

Just trying to give you some ideas. I haven't had an instance where Ghost doesn't work on an xw460c.

Re: Blade Workstation error when restoring an image with ghost

Thanks again for your help...

I validated the image with ghost and it passed.

I can view the hard drive by booting up with my ghostpe.

I boot up and can get a directory of the C: and open the boot.ini file.

I turn the Blade on and watch it go through the bios bootup. It gets to a screen where I have choices:

Setup
PXE

about 2 seconds after this screen shows I get the error:

Attempting Boot From hard drive c:

A disk error occurred

press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart

Scenario of equipment and procedures:

We are currently using a demo unit from HP.

So I have 4 XW460c blades to play with...

When we got the blades they all had Windows XP installed..

I placed an image on it with no probs and had to do a windows repair to inject the driver for the HP E200i Controller card.

This image came down fine..

When I restore the image, I do the followng steps withing Ghost WinPE boot cd..

I Gdisk32 and delete all partitions and create 3 new ones with the first partition being active.

I than place the image on the blade.

Image finishes with no errors.

I reboot and before it even gets to windows it gives me the error.

Thanks

Re: Blade Workstation error when restoring an image with ghost

Hello David,

Can you try to use DiskPart instead of GDisk32 to create your partitions? If you go into DiskPart, does it tell you if you have an active partition?
