HP SUM failing with "Error: Discovery Failed"

Using the latest HPSUM 5.3.5 on Server 2008 R2 SP1. I launch the application as Administrator and then add a target, the onboard administrator. I give the credentials and start the discovery process. It runs for about 30 seconds and then reports that the process failed during discovery. The only information is to check the logs which I checked. There's next to no information in the log files.

maybe discovery process blocked by firewall. You can check Windows firewall ports if enabled for HP SUM - page 64 - or disable temporary Windows firewall.
