8GB VC Fiber connected to 4 (2 redundant) SAN Fabrics

John had a customer question regarding SAN connectivity:

************

Hi All,

I have a customer with VC Flex 10 and 8GB VC Fabric modules connected to a 3Par and couple of EVAs via an existing 8GB Qlogic SAN Switch which is mostly out of ports.

We are proposing an additional pair of Brocade 16GB Switches and a couple of 3Par storage units for a refresh of the environment.  I would like to utilize the remaining ports on each of the 8 VC Fiber Modules and connect it to the Brocade SANs so that Blade Hosts can see both (technically 4 separate fabrics) fabrics.  I do NOT want to merge or bridge Brocade and Qlogic fabrics.  I don’t see why it won’t work but would like to make sure I am not missing something.

You will have to define 2 new SAN Fabrics in VC.

VC FC (or FC part of exFabric) is not a FC switch and thus a single BL460 type blade will be able to have:

2 connections to QLogic

Or

2 connections to Brocade

Or

1 connection to each (not redundant, should only be used for data migration)

If you think about the server profile, this makes sense as you have 2 entries for FC and you have a drop down box where you can only select 1 fabric per port.
