Question on Virtual Connect FlexFabric Fibre Channel load balancing...

Doug had a Virtual Connect FlexFabric module question:

***********************

I need assistance on a question from a partner working with a potential FlexFabric Customer. Posted question on BladeFS PDL as well.  Any comment on the following question would be appreciated…

“Here’s the problem we’re trying  to tackle.  We need to understand what the options are for optimizing the available bandwidth on the FC uplinks from the FlexFabric interconnect to the external fibre channel network.  The desire is to have all four links active and carrying traffic with load distribution.  We don’t want to use a single FC link for all traffic and also don’t like the idea of manually associating particular blades/server profiles with a specific port.  Does the FlexFabric module provide a way to accomplish that and if so how? For example, can it round-robin the NPIV login requests across multiple ports in a group together?”

Steve had some good advice:

Doug, yes, Virtual Connect manages login distribution across all uplinks in a VC SAN fabric.  Login distribution is automatic.  This is NOT Inter Switch Link Trunking (ISL), so ISL licenses are not required.

Thank you Steve, quick follow up on the same topic from the partner…

What algorithm is used for the NPIV login distribution in an “normal” situation?. i.e. Round-robin, least connections, least utilized, etc.

And Steve said:

Doug, from the dev folks….

“There is a formula, but it boils down to – port with least connections gets next login, when all things are equal use round-robin.”

Further, if a port is added or removed (within FlexFabric – FCoE connections), logins can re-distribute automatically, within VC/Flex-10 SAN connections you may need to manually redistribute logins.
