Two Virtual Connect Fibre Channel modules in C7000 I/O slots 5 and 7

Timo had a Virtual Connect Fibre Channel question:

***********************************************

I received RFP. Customer has following requirement:

-2 x 8GB FC HBA. Redundant = two single or dual port HBAs. One dual port is not redundant.

Is it supported configuration to have VC FC modules in horizontally different I/O bay rows ?

Customer requires also MAC&WWN virtualization, the VC FC is the only way to go.

Dave had the answer for Timo:

Yes, dual HBAs are supported. I have configured this on HPUX for redundancy.

IF they are using Virtual Connect, I would recommend that the customer connect their port to the even/odd(i.e. 5 & 8 or 6 & 7) modules to allow redundant paths during firmware updates. By default the FW update resets even modules then the odds, if bay 1 is master. The customer could use one of the extra/unused ports/modules for a SAN tape backup if they desire.

Good news for Timo. Are you using redundant VC FC modules?

Hi Timo,

Please be aware that your suggested config will only work with full height servers (hbas in mezz 2+3). A half height server can not use a FC switch in bay 7/8 as we do not provide a quad port hba.

Good point from Oliver
