Virtual Connect Domain - main enclosure switched off

Alexander had a customer issue with Muli-Enclosure Stacking (MES):

***************

My customer experienced an issue with Virtual Connect domain consisting of 4 enclosures (Ethernet + FC).

Customer switched off enclosure 1, but it seems it was the main enclosure in this domain, so customer may not manage his domain now.

The questions are:

  1. Is there a way to manage VC in enclosures 2-3-4 without enclosure 1 ?
  2. How to remove enclosures 2-3-4 in this domain keeping VC configuration ?
  3. What may happened if customer switch on enclosure 1 ?

Lots of input for Alexander:

From Hoa:

  1. Is there a way to manage VC in enclosures 2-3-4 without enclosure 1?  Absolutely not until enclosure 1 power back on.    That said, VC networks/SAN continued to function as normal except no VCM GUI/CLI access.
  2. How to remove enclosures 2-3-4 in this domain keeping VC configuration ?     You can remove enclosure 4, or 4 AND 3, or 4 only but not keeping 4 removing 3.    Same goes 4,3, then 2 but not just 2 while keeping 4 and 3.    Sequential order 4, 3, 2.
  3. What may happened if customer switch on enclosure 1 ?     Nothing, business as usually  unless any hardware and/or firmware changes took place.

Input from Dan:

What they should have done is migrate all the blades from 4 to 1 over time.

When the blade is powered off to move, you can then also move its profile before powering back on, so the blade should not hardly notice its been moved..

Then once 4 is empty, you can remove it from the Domain as Hoa said.

Question from Amy:

Is this procedure documented in our cookbook or user guides?
