Virtual Connect v4.3 Firmware Upgrade Redundancy
Question from Reginald regarding firmware updates:
**************
I was just review the latest VC v4.3 release notes with my customer last week. There was a statement in the release notes under fixes resolve the following issues:
┬╖ When using VCSU manual activation on HP VC FlexFabric 10Gb/24-port Modules during a firmware update, hosts will not be able to log in through the FC uplinks after the standby module is activated/rebooted until a VCM failover is initiated or if the primary module is activated/rebooted.
Based on the above statement the customer has express some concerns about doing the VC firmware upgrades in their production environment. The statement implies that there will be an interruption in service until the modules are rebooted. Are we interpreting the above statement incorrectly or can the customer still perform a firmware upgrade in a production environment without any downtime?
Thanks!
*************
Info from Dan:
*************
Any existing FC connections will still work.
Any new connections or reconnections will not work until VCM is failed over to the 4.30 based module.
VC upgrade of a basic enclosure:
- Secondary module activates (reboots)
- VCM fails over from old version primary module to new version module.
- Former primary module activates (reboots)
It's that second step that has to happen to allow new FC connections.

Re: Virtual Connect v4.3 Firmware Upgrade Redundancy
Hi Chuckk,
I never advise to do online VC updates. My experience with many vc updates is that there can be unplanned downtime sometimes. This is one of the senarios "loosing pending profiles", but see a lot more situations of unplanned downtime during updating. There can always be a unknown bug in VC, OA or can be in a hba or nic driver/firmware or NCU teaming, etc. Online update can be good or can be bad, your never known for 100% sure. Thats why i prefer offline updates.
Unfortunaly the VC 4.30 FW seems like to offline for downloading on the web, i cant find a download link either.
