c-3000 chassis with one VC Flex-10 module

Mike had a c3000 question:

With setting up VC with only one VC module is it active / active or active standby?  Would you set up nic1’s to goto one trunk pair to a switch and nic2’s  to a second trunk pair to a second switch? Any doc’s for this on the c-3000? Figures my first remote VC install and it couldn’t be cut and dry.

The answer, of course, is “it depends”.

If you connect two VC uplinks in a single uplink set to the same switch, they’ll both be active.  If you connect them to two different switches, one will be active and the other standby.  If the switches are configured specially (using, say, HP Networking’s Intelligent Resilient Framework (IRF)) so that they can operate as a single virtual switch, you can connect multiple uplinks from the same VC module to different switches, and they’ll all be active.

IMHO, if you only have the LOM NICs and only one Virtual Connect module, I’d go with the active/passive setup (with 2 uplinks to each switch, all in a single shared uplink set) rather than deal with NIC teaming – which would buy you relatively little in this setup.
