Exporting Meta Data of more than 6000 records

I want to export over 6000 records of a certain type to an excel spreadsheet.  I also want to selectively choose about 10 fields to export.  However, when using either send to xml or using Trimport there doesn't appear to be any option to choose what fields you want to export.  Therefore it exports everything and excel has a problem handling the amount of data.  For some reason it has multiple rows per record number which blows the export out to well over 300,000 rows (Excel 2007 32bit has a limitation of 65536 rows).  I can open the 40MB+ xml file with Excel 2010 64 bit, (takes around 20 minutes to open), but manipulating the data is time consuming.  Any ideas on how to selectively export only the required fields?

Find the records you want to export, > tag all > right-click > send-to Print Merge > select comma separated text file format and then chose the fields you want to export.

Open the file in Excel and voila.
