Password protected documents in HP RM Database

Hi,

HP RM8.1.1.7760, Win 7, SQL 2012, MS Office 2010

Password protected documents in the Database? Illegal off course, but:

How we can search and find them in the database?

Ho we can stop them being saved to a database?

I tried to do search in this forum, could not find any topic related.

they are also causing issues to IDOL indexing

(As documents that have "Track Changes" in e.g. MS Word still visible, meaning, not finished.applied)

Thanks

No way to check. You can probably rely on the IDOL indexing logs to report password protected records, but TRIM/HPRM can't check this for you.

Just tell users not to do it.

Thanks,

not even on the store side, folder to display the properties of the documents? ....Protected or anything...

Something like that does not exist?

Re: Password protected documents in HP RM Database

As Jon mentioned, the IDOL logs may be the only place to check.

In the past, I have written a program that would scan through directories (and sub-directories) and open each document it found to extract some information from them. It would fail on password protected docs, so I just trapped that error and logged it.

The above wasn't related to TRIM, but no reason why something like that couldn't be written to identify those files (by looking through the store directly). Once you had the file names, it would be fairly trivial to locate them in the database and find the associated record.

Of course, that would assume you had access to the 'back-end', although i suppose you could do something with the SDK to do it from a client end - but that might be a bit slow...

Re: Password protected documents in HP RM Database

Thanks,

strange that Windows does not have some sort of file properties to indicate:"Password protected" ....

So, all this mean that there is also no way of HP RM stoping users from storing the protected documents in Database..

Wait, this could be done on the server side/ TRIMSTORE side?

A script to check if the document is password Protected and then display the error....or warning....

Or anything that we can put in HP RM MS Word Add-Ins? Some code?

The problem with password protected files is that huge variation is formats that can have a password, zip, rar, office documents, PDFs and more...

The only way to check this is to attempt opening the file.

This is what IDOL does already and reports already in its logs.
