Compatibility with Linksys Wireless Router

A Compaq service rep indicated that there might be some compatibility problems between the WL100 and WL200 wireless LAN cards and the Linksys wireless router. I can't get a connection between the cards and the router beyond about 40 feet. Is there a compatibility issue, and if so, what is the fix?
