4200G needs 200 attempts to route ???

Which is the correct HP-forum for a "switch 3com 4200G 24port" ?

I have a severe problem in our LAN, and to me it looks as if it is a switch-problem.

Is this a known bug in the 4200G ?

Look at this test case: It took circa 200 attempts, until the two machines found each other.

Is that the fault of the switch? How do I have to configure the switch differently?

Thanks a lot!

Re: 4200G needs 200 attempts to route ???

Hi,

When does it happen? Just after switch has been rebooted? If this is the case then this is a problem with STP. Well it's not a problem sensu stricte but how STP works. Try to set stp edge-port enable (thats the command on 5500 series) on your host ports.

Thanks A LOT!  I am VERY happy that finally someone answers.

Which is the correct forum for the 3com 4200G ?

> When does it happen?

Always. Right now. Just checked again. One direction needed only 3 attempts, until the ping worked, but the other two directions are still timeout-ing, ... Request timeout for icmp_seq 645 ... Request timeout for icmp_seq 646 ...

> Just after switch has been rebooted?

No, it's been on for ... 27 Days 1 hours 48 minutes 35 seconds

But it does NOT improve when I switch it off and on. Does it?

What is the STP?

Why was it configured wrongly when the switch was shipped to us?
No one here has changed ANY settings, we just plugged it in.

Where can I do that?   I have web-access

I want to save the configuration by "Administration ... Backup configuration ...", but how does TFTP work? Where can I put the ftp-username & password?   I have a FTP server running on another machine; when I give that IP address, it starts "backup configuration software", but then a dialog opens "transfer file error".

I would like to initialize the system ("reset to factory defaults"), but it says I would loose web access then:

3com 4200G ... administration ... initialize ...

answers

"This operation will initialize the system to factory defaults and causes a reboot, the current configuration file will be deleted. You will no longer be able to communicate via the web until access is set up via the CLI. Do you wish to continue?" - CANCEL

Please help.

I want to connect several computers here with each other, and that stupid switch hinders me to continue.

Thanks a lot!

Re: 4200G needs 200 attempts to route ???

Any ideas? Which strategy do you suggest for us?

Is that a known bug of this machine?

Thanks!

You should read about STP in your switch manual.

It wasn't wrongly configured, it was not configured at all. You have default configuration which shoud be tuned to your network needs.

Maybe you have a loop in your network? Is this the only switch that you have?
