4500: lost password after s/w update
I have two 4500 swiches in a stack. Local user settings were like:
local-user user1
password cipher %:/T*Q#V5V9./a!1$H@GYA!!
service-type ssh telnet terminal
level 3
local-user user2
password simple 123
service-type ssh telnet
level 2
After I updated my switches' software from 3.03.00s56 to 3.03.02s56 I can't log on as user1: Username:user1
Password:
% Login failed!
Though the password is correct. I could only log on as user2.
How can I reset user1's password from level 2? What have I done wrong?

Re: 4500: lost password after s/w update
I will see if I can find any more details.

Re: 4500: lost password after s/w update
"Hi Rob
Yes, I saw the same results when I upgraded from 3.02 w/password (note: there was no password in the config file)
Upgrade to 3.03 - password was removed
reinstated the password at 3.03 - it is also in the config file at this point
upgraded to 3.3.2 - password is in tact. (however now not in the config file)
I need to run 1 more test to make sure the password is in a private-data.txt file, but I must do this from the console, which I can get to at lunch."
Maybe you can login as User2, then upgrade your level so you can then set the password for the User1 account from the command line. See the following from the command reference:
Command "super"
Syntax super
View User view
Parameters level: User level, in the range of 0 to 3.
Description Use the super command to switch from the current user level to a specified level.
Username:monitor
Password:
<213>
<213>super
Password:
User privilege level is 3, and only those commands can be used
whose level is equal or less than this.
Privilege note: 0-VISIT, 1-MONITOR, 2-SYSTEM, 3-MANAGE
<213>
<213>sys
System View: return to User View with Ctrl+Z.
local-user admin
password cipher NEW
This show you upgrading User2 for just this session, editing the SYS config, going to the other account, changing the password. Then you should be able to logout and come in as User1 with the NEW password and good to go.
Let me know if this helps, Please.
Rob.

Re: 4500: lost password after s/w update
Command "super"
Syntax super
also doest'n work. I had a super password level 3 cipher "2Xa
I managed to log on to the switch as 'admin' with empty (default) password, not the password I have set for admin previously. I had to go to the switch with a notebook and a console cable, because admin has only service-type terminal.
Is this a bug or a feature? I found nothing about resetting passwords to their default values in the documentation.

Re: 4500: lost password after s/w update
Personally capture all configuration and paste to
notepad and reset to switch with when booting switch via CTRL + B and follow the 4500 operational manual.
If Everything is ok paste to previous configuration to switch everything is that.
