5800 software availability/upgrade path

Hi guys,

Where can I get the latest software for these switches:
H3C S5820X-28C, currently running: 5.20, Release 1211
H3C S5800-56C, currently running: 5.20, Release 1211P08
(I couldn't find any HPE product numbers in the display diag)

It looks like this software is quite old.
Is a direct upgrade to the latest version possible? If not, what would be the upgrade path?

Re: 5800 software availability/upgrade path

Hi!

Here the magic word is "branding" (have a look to this thread <- it links you to two nice PDF, especially the second one...and also here...just to familiarize with the branding concept)...an HP branded switch could be (re)branded H3C and vice-versa...at least up to a particular software version IIRC (after that...once you have moved your H3C Switch in the HP/HPE brand and you started to update it with newer HP software versions....you're switch will stay on the HP brand due to software related restrictions).

  • H3C S5820X Switch Series could be branded to HP becoming HP A5820X Switch Series
  • H3C S5800 Switch Series could be branded to HP becoming HP A5800 Switch Series

So it's a matter of looking or HP A5820X and A5800 Switch Series.

Try to see if on H3C you have the display brand command and the brand command (the latter admits hp | h3c as options), if so moving to hp means executing brand hp and then reboot with the command reboot.

Eventually verify if your H3C supports the oem command instead of the cited brand command (if so, to rebrand the switch from H3C to HP will be a matter of using display oem and oem hp respectively).

Go to HPE Networking Lookup Tool page here and look for 5800 and 5820...there will start your journey to understand what software you can use first and if you will need interim versions before applying the latest available.

Try, as example, to look for the JC101A  HP 5800-48G Switch with 2 Slots...it will show you Comware 5.20 R12xx (old, previous releases) and R18xx...this looks promising if compared to JC102B (newer)...which has ONLY Comware 5.20 R18xx.

Probably the correct software branch for both of your H3C Switch Series is exactly that one...the one valid for the SKU JC101A (and many more SKUs of that age). You should read the first Release Notes of R18 (first HP R1808P02) to understand how migrate (upgrade) from R12 (lastet HP R1211P09) to R18...once done reading the latest RN of R18 (latest HP R1810P16) will let you know how to update within the same R18 software branch.

Consider that HP R1808P02 supports these HP SKUs:

  • JC099A HP 5800-24G-POE SWITCH
  • JC100A HP 5800-24G SWITCH
  • JC101A HP 5800-48G SWITCH WITH 2 SLOTS
  • JC102A HP 5820-24XG-SFP+ SWITCH
  • JC103A HP 5800-24G-SFP SWITCH
  • JC104A HP 5800-48G-POE SWITCH
  • JC105A HP 5800-48G SWITCH
  • JC106A HP 5820-14XG-SFP+ SWITCH WITH 2 SLOTS
  • JG219A HP 5820AF-24XG SWITCH
  • JG225A HP 5800AF-48G SWITCH
  • JG242A HP 5800-48G-POE+ TAA SWITCH W 2 SLOTS
  • JG243A HP 5820-24XG-SFP+ TAA-COMPLIANT SWITCH
  • JG254A HPE 5800 24G POE+ TAA SWITCH
  • JG255A HP 5800-24G TAA-COMPLIANT SWITCH
  • JG256A HP 5800-24G-SFP TAA SWITCH W 1 INTF SLT
  • JG257A HP 5800-48G-POE+ TAA SWITCH WITH 1 SLOT
  • JG258A HP 5800-48G TAA SWITCH W 1 INTF SLOT
  • JG259A HP 5820X-14XG-SFP+ TAA SWITCH W 2 SLOTS
