Bridge Aggregation (ESXi) ping to Windows connected in the same switch fails

Hi All,

We have a HP 5900 switch where in 3 ports are aggregated and connected to a ESXi where the iphash setting has been done at the vSwitch level and at the Management Network level.

Now we have a windows machine connected to the same switch to a single port and no aggregation at the switch, the VLANs allowed are same for both ESXi and windows but once IPs has been assigned, the machines fail to ping each other

Any configuration mismatch that could be possible, please post your opinions.

I found that the mac-address learned by the switch appears for some time and disappears after sometime as shown below, this is in case of ESXi, however the windows MAC remains

[HP5900]display mac-address interface Bridge-Aggregation 45
MAC Address      VLAN ID    State            Port/NickName            Aging
[HP5900]

[HP5900]display mac-address interface Bridge-Aggregation 45
MAC Address      VLAN ID    State            Port/NickName            Aging
a0d3-c101-b15c   1          Learned          BAG45                   Y

Thanks

When you are setting up the LACP on the ESX side, you need to make sure you do not accept the default hashing algorithm, whatever that is - you need to select something different for hashing out of the drop-down menu.

Also, pinging the Windows host is not the best test as the Windows firewall often causes you to misinterpret your ping test result when it fails.

Best first test is to ping from the host to its default GW.

Thanks for the reply Vince.

We are using Standard vSwitches in ESXi 5.5, can we enable LACP on standard VMware vSwitches ?

And the windows host has firewall disabled for time being in order to test the connectivity.

Thanks,

Deepak

Re: Bridge Aggregation (ESXi) ping to Windows connected in the same switch fails

Just checked in the VMware KB article that

"Beginning with vSphere 5.1, VMware supports Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) on vSphere Distributed Switch (VDS) only. "

we are using standard vswitches on ESXi 5.1

Re: Bridge Aggregation (ESXi) ping to Windows connected in the same switch fails

I did try making the port where windows is connected to access port but they do not ping to each other

however, ping from switch to ESXi host and ping from switch to windows machine works fine.

ESXi and windows is in VLAN-1, but both the machines are not able to ping to each other, ESXi NIC ports are in aggregation in the HP5900 switch. ESXi has standard switches and guess that does not require LACP config.
