Re: HP 5510 SFP fail

Which software versions (Comware 7.10 Release xxxx) is currently running - use display version - on your HPE FlexNetwork 5510 HI Switch [*]?

What are the outputs of display transceiver interface [interface-type interface-number], display transceiver alarm interface [interface-type interface-number] and display transceiver diagnosis interface [interface-type interface-number] commands with regard to interfaces where JD119B and JD118B SFP Transceivers were used?

[*] The family includes those models:

  • JH145A HPE 5510 24G 4SFP+ HI Switch
  • JH146A HPE 5510 48G 4SFP+ HI Switch
  • JH147A HPE 5510 24G POE+ 4SFP+ HI Switch
  • JH148A HPE 5510 48G POE+ 4SFP+ HI Switch
  • JH149A HPE 5510 24G SFP 4SFP+ HI Switch

Actualy 1st time the Transceviers were accepted by th HP 5510

But when the switch reboot, most of the trasceviers / all were rejected by the switch. even replug also not worked and given a following error ( all are pulg to 1 Gig ports )

%Jan 14 22:50:14:906 2013 CHDL_S5510_1_SEVR OPTMOD/4/MODULE_IN: -Slot=2; GigabitEthernet2/0/4: The transceiver is UNKNOWN_SFP_PLUS.

I checked with 5510 data sheet and JD 119B and JD118B are accepted.  1st time all are functioned propoerly, but when power rebooted , all were become to unsupported and not even accepted by the switch..

Those transceivers (allreday pluged ,before rebboot) never accepted / worked by the switch  and if we plug new one / same model , it will become to work.

plaease guide me to solve the problem

Re: HP 5510 SFP fail

Yes, SFP Transceivers JD118B and JD119B are supported (as per QuickSpecs), that's the minimum. The root cause of the problem you are facing (Sw/Hw issue, bug, whatever you can think of...) needs first to be exactly identified (not only what you see...which is only the symptom of the problem)...only then one can look for a solution/fix (if any).

Provided that you're using genuine (AKA original) HP Transceivers the only SFP Transceivers similar issue (SFP Transceivers that become unavailable after a reboot) I was able to find on latest R11 Release Notes is an old (2016) bug fixed with release R1121P01 (November 2016):

"201607220132

Symptom: After the switch is powered off and rebooted, information is modified for some transceiver modules that are not write-protected, and the transceiver modules become unavailable because of damage.

Condition: This symptom might occur if the switch is powered off and rebooted."

I don't know if that fixed bug matches exactly your case nor if your SFP Transceivers are/aren't permanently damaged or are re-usable if you do the (suggested) update. It's up to you to proceed and test.

IMHO, regardless, you should keep your Switch updated: so update the current Switch's firmware version - which is 2 Years old - to latest R1122P02 (August 2017) from the actual R1111P01 (October 2015) and see what will happen with regard to unrecognized SFP Transceivers.

Re: HP 5510 SFP fail

Thanks again..!!!

the allready pulg transceviers  to the HP5510 caN't be used agin to the same switch. but I was tested that can be used to HP 1920 switch and its worked but when plugin the trasceviers (used on 5510) with 1920 given a error "check some error" and its work fine..

I don't know that 5510 can be re programed it self the sfps   or How it will happend 1920 and given error check some ..

I think 5510 was memorized the failed sfps which cause of not allowed to used it agin to the same switch. ( but can be used in 1920 with check some err )

How can I check whether that sfps are genuine or not .

Any CLI command to re allowed those sfps with 5510 .

I will try to upgrade the switch firmware with latest one.

Re: HP 5510 SFP fail

Try to update your Switch's firmware first...then, after the Switch rebooted, test your SFP Transceivers again.

Details about SFP/SFP+ Transceivers can be obtained with commands I posted above (as example: display transceiver interface GigabitEthernet2/0/4).

Are you using SFP Transceivers on 4 SFP+ Slots on the Switch's frontplane or on a SFP+ ports on an additional module placed on the back slot or - correctly - on the 24 SFP ports on the frontplane? are you using IRF? ...please be more descriptive...provide more info/details, describe your SFP setup otherwise other HPE Community users will not be able to help.

Re: HP 5510 SFP fail

detail of the setup,

two of 5510 24G SFP 4SFP+ HI 1-slot Switch es were stack using IRF and connected with using two 10Gig DAC cables on port 27 and 28 in the both switches. (it doesn't have any problem )

27 of fiber 1 Gig ports are connected to two swithes (one stack) ( switch 1 - 13 and switch 2 - 14 ) and edge side used Hp 1920 switches (used same sfp model - JD119 and JD118 ) - problem when 5510 rebooing :'(

combo ports on both 5510 were used for copper links ( servers, wifi controllers , firewalls ... ) <- no problem

Only the problem occured on the Fiber downlinks (both 5510 side ) which are connected with HP 1920.

Thanks a lot for reply and I will try to upgrade the switches. ( since both 5510 are stack , can I upgrade both at one time ? )

Re: HP 5510 SFP fail

OK, clear now.

With regard to Switch Comware 7 operating system software update on HPE FlexNetwork 5510 HI Switch Series, as per its QuickSpecs, you should be able to use the ISSU method (you need to verify which software version will let you to perform a Compatible ISSU to keep IRF downtime as low as possible).

AFAIK your actual software version R1111P01 is too old to be able to support ISSU feature: on HPE 5510 HI Switch Series ISSU was introduced since software version R1120 so you are going to be forced to update the IRF as per standard procedure with some downtime you need to take care of planning a maintenance window (refer to HPE FlexNetwork 5510 HI official fundamental configuration guide to see what is the best approach) and only when your IRF members will be both at R1120 or newer version you will be then able to use ISSU for the next update procedure(s).

Thanks again :-)

Thanks a lot for your valuable guidelines .

I will do the upgrade and let you know the status.

Is there any way to check the transceviers are genuine or not

Please, see my very first post above and eventually report outputs back (sanitized=remove S/N), if you want.

What are the outputs of display transceiver interface [interface-type interface-number], display transceiver alarm interface [interface-type interface-number] and display transceiver diagnosis interface [interface-type interface-number] commands with regard to interfaces where JD119B and JD118B SFP Transceivers were used?

I add also display transceiver manuinfo interface [interface-type interface-number].
