IRF as Failover?

What is the main reason why one would configure IRF for switches? Is it for Failover like many people think? Please advise. Thanks.

It's for resiliency and efficiency.
If you daisy-chain switches, you have multiple configs to manage as well as a STP topology to manage.

With an IRF stack you have turned your multiple physical switches into a single switch for management purposes, including you now have just the one device for STP.

If Layer3 functionality is required, IRFing the switches is even better.
