Port issue connecting 5120 switch to 5800 switch

I am having an issue that I just cannot figure out. I have 5120 switches in an IRF and I want to connect the IRF to my 5800 switch. I have a fiber cable running from GI1/0/49 on the 5120 to TEN 1/0/53 on the 5800. I do not get a link light on the 5800. If I connect the fiber from the 5120 IRF to a standalone 5120 I get a clean connection, lights go on, and everything is happy. I put the fiber back into the 5800 and all link lights stay off.

I have checked both ports and nothing is shut.

5120:

 port link-type trunk
 port trunk permit vlan 1 to 16 30 to 31 40 42 101 120 200 203 210 254

5800:

interface Ten-GigabitEthernet1/0/53
 port link-mode bridge
 port link-type trunk
 port trunk permit vlan 1 to 16 30 to 31 40 42 101 120 200 203 210 254

I am missing something, I am just not sure what.

Thanks much!

Dave

Re: Port issue connecting 5120 switch to 5800 switch

I'm guessing you're putting an SFP (not SFP+) transceiver in the Te1/0/53 on the 5800? You'll probably need to put "speed 1000" under the interface, the interface would be 10G per default.

I tried that and received "Operation not supported". I looked and this is a SFP+ adapter. Also, I just tried a trunk over an Ethernet cable and it is working, so it definately has something to do with that port. Interesting.

Well, you'll need an SFP transciever, not SFP+. SFP+ is 10G and won't do 1G. An SFP will do 1G in the TenGig ports though.

Thanks much!. Time to get the correct adapter then!
