difference between HP X130 and HP X132 10G SFP+ LC transceivers?

The QuickSpecs for the HP FF5700 and HPE 5900 switches refer to HP X130 10G SFP+ LC transceivers.

The QuickSpecs for the X132 transceivers can be found at https://www.hpe.com/h20195/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=c04154410, but I cannot find any for the X130s.
What is the difference between the two?

Re: difference between HP X130 and HP X132 10G SFP+ LC transceivers?

Good question...probably there wasn't any particular *engineering* difference.

I have the suspect that that HP HP X130 was the family name (with its related SKUs) of 10G SFP+ Transceivers adopted and supported by Comware based Switches like the one of FlexFabric, Altoline, Blade and FlexNetwork Switch series (see 12500, 10500, 5700 and so on)...while the HP X132 was, at about the same time, the family name (with its related SKUs) of 10G SFP+ Transceivers adopted and supported on some - not all - ProVision (now ArubaOS-Switch) based Switches like the 6600 (retired), 5400 zl, 8200 zl, Aruba 5400R zl2, 2920 and so on.

This difference looks quite clear if you look at HP FlexNetwork Portfolio Guide (2012, so historical!) in which both HP X132/X130 10G SFP+ Transceivers families were listed in the same Switches Support Matrix.

The same is actually true if you look at HP FlexNetwork Portfolio Guide (2016, so actual): this document has the same name (4AA1-4855ENW.pdf) but its publication date is very actual compared to the first one.

The X130 10G SFP+ LC Transceivers family had these SR, LR, LRM and ER models:

  • (JD092B) HP X130 10G SFP+ LC SR Transceiver
  • (JD094B) HP X130 10G SFP+ LC LR Transceiver
  • (JD093B) HP X130 10G SFP+ LC LRM Transceiver
  • (JG234A) HP X130 10G SFP+ LC ER 40 km Transceiver

The X132 10G SFP+ LC Transceivers family had these SR, LR, LRM and ER models:

  • (J9150A) HP X132 10G SFP+ LC SR Transceiver
  • (J9151A) HP X132 10G SFP+ LC LR Transceiver
  • (J9152A) HP X132 10G SFP+ LC LRM Transceiver
  • (J9153A) HP X132 10G SFP+ LC ER 40 km Transceiver

Technically I'm not able to say for sure they were (or weren't) really different at engineering level (for sure their SKUs were different)...but *I think* they simply weren't.

The HP X130 10G SFP+ Transceivers QuickSpecs seems really unobtanium.

Re: difference between HP X130 and HP X132 10G SFP+ LC transceivers?

I thought that maybe the X132s were the successors of the X130s, but apart from them having different SKU's, according to the HP FlexNetwork Portfolio Guide you refer to, the X132-series is only supported on the VirtualConnect modules.

Curious.

Not the answer I was looking for, but at least I know now that the X130 is what we need to order.

Thanks for your help, parnassus.

I think they were substantially contemporary but marketed for different Networking product lines and yes, the X132s are supported also on Virtual Connect (I didn't noticed that).

Re: difference between HP X130 and HP X132 10G SFP+ LC transceivers?

The X130's have additional information in the EEPROM that is required for use on Comware switches.  If that information is not found in a transceiver that you want to use, Comware will warn you that you are using a "Phony" transceiver and it may or may not function in a Comware switch.

Yep, that's a way to create a greylist/blacklist on Hardware options...the same could be said about ProVision based Switches too...only newer ArubaOS-Switch 16.02 Software version permits to "enable" some "non HPE genuine" Transceivers.

Are there other differences at Hardware level (not EEPROM related)?
