10mps internet over our 8760 AP's

Our building has 12 - 3Com 8760 Wireless Access Points to distribute internet wifi for the building.  We have switched from a T1 connection at 1.5mps to a 10mps internet connection.  I test 10mps on the network with a cable, but the best the wifi can do is about 4.2 to 4.8mps at any given time of day (or night).  My over-the-air connection speed is 54mps between the computer and the access point.  This system was installed 2 years ago by an IT company that is no longer available.  Is there something I can address that is holding our speeds back?
