Guest blog by Bryan Jacquot, Chief Technologist, HP Converged Systems

Previously, I described how HP OneView hits a hole-in-one by providing the top features that administrators and developers look for in an API.  In this post, I’ll tell you precisely why RESTful APIs are ideal for managing your converged infrastructure.

First, RESTful APIs give you the ability to integrate across your enterprise.  We understand enterprises have a broad set of management applications, including those created in-house.  HP OneView’s RESTful APIs enable endless possibilities for integrating into your environment.  Second, the RESTful APIs provide you with the ability to create simple scripts to automate operations such as updating firmware in your blade enclosures that complies with your maintenance practices.

These two benefits are critically important.  If your data center is like most, a lot of maintenance operations have to take place late at night, when it’s easier to avoid disrupting users.  As business needs rise and data centers expand, managers are finding there aren’t enough hours in the day to keep up with demand, much less to develop new solutions. By automating tasks with RESTful APIs such as those provided by HP OneView, admins advance from valiantly striving just to keep the data center up and running, to having time to devise innovative business solutions.

Conventional data center management tools provide the ability to script tasks, but often require you to rely on slow, complicated interfaces which can be difficult to program and represent a dead-end.  Instead, most users are seeking the latest standards, such as those employed by OpenStack.  In addition, the traditional scripting model doesn’t scale well, making automation increasingly ineffective and unrealistic as your infrastructure grows to accommodate more virtual machines, devices, data, and users.

Give system admins a REST

By replacing the hodgepodge of traditional management systems with HP OneView’s uniform RESTful APIs, you can extend and automate your environment. Common to two-thirds of today’s top web environments and technologies, including the likes of OpenStack, Twitter and Facebook, RESTful APIs simplify the automation process, making it easier to extend the functionality of your management platform. HP OneView scripts are built to scale, which means they will continue to work efficiently no matter how large your data center becomes.

What other advantages do HP OneView’s RESTful APIs provide?

  • Simple JSON data format that is familiar and lightweight
  • Every resource in HP OneView is a URI, which means the API inherently scales
  • PowerShell and Python sample libraries let you create customized workflows and scripts
  • A uniform data model across the converged infrastructure
  • Thorough documentation, enabling rapid onramp for new administrators and developers

As an added bonus, your administrators get their lives back. Rather than occurring in the dead of night, many tasks can be performed in the middle of the day, or scheduled to run outside of normal business hours using simple scheduling tools such as Microsoft Windows Task Scheduler or cron on Linux.

Dynamic messaging

In addition to the powerful REST API, HP OneView provides a rich and powerful state change message bus based on the Advanced Message Queuing ProtocolRabbitMQ is the specific implementation used by HP OneView, which is aligned with OpenStack.  This message bus allows you to subscribe to the events you choose and respond to them as appropriate.  For example, if you need to register new hardware in your asset-tracking database, you can create a small script to listen for the specific message that indicates a new enclosure has been brought under management by HP OneView, and in response add it to your asset tracker.  Maybe you need to add new servers to your application monitoring tool.  Once again, you can listen for messages indicating a new profile has been deployed and add the resource to your application monitoring tool automatically.

Unleash the creativity to meet business demands

Just as a good tool can become even better in the hands of an artist, RESTful APIs provide admins with the opportunity to be creative, because of the APIs’ extensibility, and because of the extra time gained by the automation of routine tasks.

The entire architecture of HP OneView is built on RESTful APIs and the AMQP message bus.  These two technologies make the interface fully programmable and allow you to easily create customized workflows and scripts.
