BP Invests $100Million in new Supercomputing Center in Houston

on ‎11-05-2013 11:55 AM

BP opened a computing center last Tuesday that is home to the world’slargest supercomputer for commercial research. The three-story, 110,000-square foot facility on BP’s west Houston campus houses over 5,400 HP ProLiant SL230s servers, leaving plenty of space for growth. HP and Intel helped develop the processing power at the center of BP’s five-year, $100 million investment.

Advanced computers have played a major role in the current oil boom, helping geophysicists find and analyze underground reserves faster and with more certainty, giving them clear pictures of underground areas that they couldn’t see before. The memory and hard disk capabilities of the center are substantial. In addition, the center implements advanced cooling methods that use 30 percent less energy than BP’s previous computing center.

Use these to demonstrate HP’s power to accelerate innovation at any scale for high performance computing customers in the energy industry.
