Converged Infrastructure questions IT executives keep asking—IDC Connection reports.

DuncanCampbell on ‎04-21-2014 07:00 AM

Sometimes I forget that Converged infrastructure (CI) is old hat to us. I am proud that we were the first to introduce this revolutionary concept in 2009 – with an installed base in the 1000s. While we’ve been at it for a while, we’ve been working to get the word out on all of the latest enhancements. And not just our word—the word of some industry experts you trust.

In an earlier blog, I conveyed how HP called upon the Gartner Group to help enterprise IT folks sort through the confusion and provided insights about questions you should ask your CI vendor. Now we turned to IDC’s Jed Scaramella (Research Director, Enterprise Platforms and Datacenter Trends) to address questions IT executives were asking us—and along with his answers we compiled them in a series of three IDC Analyst Connection briefs. As you would expect, Jed’s answers are fairly comprehensive, and it wouldn’t be fair to paraphrase, so I’ll just tell you what questions he covers in each brief.

IDC Analyst Connection #1

Improving IT Efficiency and Enabling the Business with Converged Infrastructure

IDC report 1.jpgI think of this as the “Why converged infrastructure?” issue. We asked Jed about the pressures businesses face that have them turning to IT for solutions as well as the challenges IT must confront. We asked what contributes to the IT inefficiencies driving CI and what risks IT organizations face if they don’t evolve their infrastructure. And we tried to seek greater clarity on the real benefits businesses can achieve with CI.

Converged Systems: Key Requirements

IDC report 2.jpgThis is the “How do I evaluate CI vendors?” issue. We asked Jed what key issues organizations should consider and what questions you should ask of vendors. We asked him to compare and contrast vendors who provide a complete offering vs. those who partner with others to create the complete solution you need. And we asked what factors other than the servers, storage, and network devices themselves you should consider – such as management, or services.

Converged Systems Management: Key Features

IDC report 3.jpgThis is the “What’s important beyond just the hardware?” issue. Converged infrastructure is all about simplifying IT so you can spend less time implementing, integrating, and maintaining systems and more time doing what the business needs most. A lot of that is enabled by a unified management and automation system that provides a single view of your entire infrastructure. So we asked Jed what the key management challenges are and how eliminating IT silos effects management processes. We asked what pain points centralized management can ease, how management tools can speed provisioning of services, and what organizational impacts you should consider.

Even though none of Jed’s answers really surprised us, we know his years of experience will be invaluable to you as you refine and become more confident on your convergence journey …
