DCIM: Backbone of the new data center

on ‎04-01-2014 02:34 PM

The task of managing the data center has risen to new heights of complexity in recent years, with the emergence of cloud and hybrid delivery; unpredictable workloads from big data and mobile; multiple vendors; and the ever more pressing challenge of aligning IT with business priorities. It’s a wonder the whole thing somehow keeps from spinning out of control.

A solution is emerging in the form of data center infrastructure management (DCIM). In the words of HP Critical Facilities expert Aaron Carman, “HP really believes that DCIM is a foundational, operational tool that will, when properly integrated into an environment, become the backbone for operational data to traverse from many of the different tools that are used to operate the data center, from IT service management (ITSM), to IT infrastructure management, and the critical facilities management tools.”

Aaron was speaking in an interview with analyst Dana Gardner, alongside HP IT Management expert Steve Wibrew. Check out Dana’s blog post Fast-changing demands on data centers drive need for uber data center infrastructure management, or listen to the podcast below to find out:

  • What are the promises – and limitations — of DCIM?
  • How does DCIM help simplify routine management tasks like eliminating redundant equipment?
  • How does HP help organizations identify and attain their top DCIM priorities?
