HP OneView and HP OMI – An Open Bridge to the Software Defined Data Center

Transitioning to the software-defined data center (SDDC) just became easier as a result of a new integration of two essential platforms.


Thousands of enterprise worldwide use HP Business Service Management (BSM) and third party tools to monitor and manage their IT operations. Now these organizations can transition their existing management software and processes to the SDDC through the integration of the HP Operations Manager i (OMi) and HP OneView. OMi is an open platform designed to consolidate input from a wide range of tools. It is a manager of managers that supports infrastructure and applications from hundreds of different vendors, as well as HP hardware and tools.


The integration of OMi with HP OneView provides a bridge to the future. OMi provides integration between HP OneView, HP Software, and third party software applications.  It facilitates the coexistence of existing legacy systems and management tools with converged infrastructure and software defined technologies.


HP OneView is a converged management platform that is a fundamental component of HP’s open approach to a SDDC. It supports all HP converged infrastructure, and it features an automation hub in the core architecture. The automation hub is the combination of a RESTful API that can integrate with other tools and platforms, such as OMi, combined with a State Change Message Bus (SCMB). The SCMB detects changes in the environment; HP OneView serves as a publisher and OMi is a consumer on the bus (see the image below for a conceptual overview).

OMi and HP OneView work in a very complimentary fashion. HP OneView is focused at the infrastructure level, and it provides lifecycle management, provisioning and detailed monitoring of both physical and virtual components. The mapping of the components along with all their relationships is maintained in HP OneView, and this data is constantly updated in OMi as changes are made to the supported hardware. OMi is focused at the application level, so it understands the relationships between the applications and the supporting infrastructure.


For example, if there is a problem with one of the devices supported by HP OneView, an update of the change of status will be sent to OMi via the message bus. OMi will consume the data and generate an alert in the OMi console. The impact of a failure to the applications and associated business services will be clearly identified. Then the root cause can be quickly isolated in OMi for rapid root cause analysis.


OMi incorporate events, metrics, and topology from HP and third-party systems and network tools, such as Nagios, IBM Tivoli NetCool/Omnibus, Microsoft System Center Operations Manager, SolarWinds Orion, etc., through connectors developed by HP and partners. There is currently support for 46 different software applications. The initial initiation with OMI focuses on processing alerts from HP OneView. These alerts when combined with information from additional sources, allow operators to quickly determine the impact to the business and end users, and which team/skills should be assigned to the issue.


Success in the industry

This integration provides customer a truly open means of transitioning to the SDDC with real business benefits. The cutting edge correlation capabilities provided by OMi have been saving customers, such as Kuveyt Turk bank, hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. Implementing OMi resulted in a 300% ROI at Vodafone Ireland in their first year.   OMi provides support for a broad set of heterogeneous hardware.  Using OMi can ease the transition to HP OneView by having a view of both HP OneView and broader legacy environments that are either made up of other HP servers and storage as well as third party hardware.


This bridge to the SDDC is available now. It is a customer and user centered approach, not a vendor-focused approach. It stands in stark contrast to the Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) strategy advocated by Cisco. HP provides IT organizations with a means of preserving the value of prior investments, ensuring SLAs in daily operations, and transitioning to SDDC and the ability to provide IT as-a-Service in a way that makes sense to them.
