HP customised vSphere 5.1 & 5.5 image - new test SNMP trap feature

on ‎03-05-2014 02:23 PM

Hi VMWare people,

I noticed only today when browsing through the recently superseded HP customized vSphere 5.1 & 5.5 image (Sept) release notes that there is a new feature called “test SNMP trap”.

There is new utility is packaged into the image called HPTESTEVENT.  Using this utility it can send a test WBEM indication and test SNMP trap.

Release notes can be found here:  http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.BINARYPORTLET/public/kb/docDisplay/resource.process/?javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.rid_ba847bafb2a2d782fcbb0710b053ce01=docDisplayResURL&javax.portlet.rst_ba847bafb2a2d782fcbb0710b053ce01=wsrp-resourceState%3DdocId%253Demr_na-c03934628-3%257CdocLocale%253Den_US&ja...

More information on how to use HPTESTEVENT utility, e.g. command syntax can be found from page 13 onwards in this manual (HP VMware Utilities User Guide

VMware vSphere 5.5 for September 2013)

https://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.BINARYPORTLET/public/kb/docDisplay/resource.process/?spf_p.tpst=kbDocDisplay_ws_BI&spf_p.rid_kbDocDisplay=docDisplayResURL&javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&spf_p.rst_kbDocDisplay=wsrp-resourceState%3DdocId%253Demr_na-c03934591-1%257CdocLocale%253Den_US&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken

This is a HUGE step forwards, as there has not been a means of sending a test trap from an ESXi host to a SIM server in

Thought you might like to know, as this feature doesn’t seem to have been publicized at all.

I haven’t had the chance to test it, but if someone can try it and let us know if they are able to successfully receive a test trap event with SIM, that would be much appreciated.  The HPTESTEVENT utility documentation appears to be a little “light”.  For example, it doesn’t say how to set the IP address for a SNMP trap destination IP address within vSphere (ESXi).

Presumably the HPTESTEVENT utility is also present in the current Feb 2014 customised images, but there is no mention of it in the release notes that I could find.
