Hi all –

At this point we’ve all probably heard the term ‘Hybrid Cloud’ used relative to IT. But do you have a firm grasp about:

  • What it really is?
  • The value proposition to your business?
  • Why it is strategically important at this particular point in time?
  • How (and are) Business and IT decision-makers being affected by it?

There have been extensive discussions as well as studies reinforcing the proposition that data and IT complexity are both increasing exponentially. Server workloads are increasing, network bandwidth is growing, power costs are escalating, and data growth in exploding—all to the point of creating broad challenges of how best to protect, analyze, manage, and move data. All of these factors contribute to the primary reason IT organizations need to change from that of a fundamental support function to an organization that is the core component of the value delivery chain. This reconstituted IT organization needs to be agile and innovative to stay relevant not only within the construct of the business but also within the market. And if that wasn’t enough—globalization now requires rethinking how IT is supported because not only the workforce but also customers can be located anywhere in the world. Meanwhile, social media is forcing a closer and timelier communications between vendors and end users. All this affects IT decision makers like never seen before.

Getting inside the head of your business leaders ...

From a CIO perspective, greater demands require IT to become a value center and growth engine capable of driving business results. In fact, a recent CIO Magazine survey found that 72% of CIOs state that they need to improve use of data and analytics to improve business decisions and outcomes while 66% are looking to identify new ways IT can better support business/marketing objectives*. These leaders want innovative, cutting edge IT - a big reason why infrastructure convergence (delivered by HP with HP Converged Infrastructure) is seen as the best alternative that delivers greater simplicity to enable IT orgs to become a service broker. In turn, IT leaders know they need to become more service-oriented. These folks are looking for new and innovative approaches that deliver proven value; especially as they are working within ever-tighter budget constraints. These Tech Leaders consider uptime to be a primary focus because downtime is both a job risk and a detriment to the company brand. This greater sensitivity to risk has made security a top consideration. And on top of that, they are looking for ways to improve IT project delivery performance, develop new skills to better support emerging technologies and business innovation, and even reorganize or retrain IT to better align with business outcomes and drive innovation.

All this is why we see our enterprise customers acting on how to move ahead on their journey beyond virtualization to Cloud solutions. Things like:

... Which workloads and which apps make sense?

... Do I need to move off-premise?

... What about native cloud apps that leverage services?

HP’s view is that all of these trends are leading to the emergence of complex, multi-cloud architectures. Currently we talk about setting up a private cloud or using a public cloud. In the future, we believe application architectures will involve multiple private clouds and multiple public clouds. The distinction between private and public clouds will go away and architectures will become more complex with different hybrid computing architectures; which is why HP also believes IT decisions makers need to start planning for ‘Hybrid Cloud’ to meet the demand of their business today, tomorrow, and beyond.

What is Hybrid Cloud?

Hybrid Cloud is the integration of private cloud, public cloud and traditional IT. With Hybrid Cloud, enterprises and service providers will provide the speed, agility and security required for IT organizations to be a core part of the business value delivery chain. With Hybrid Cloud, IT organizations will be able to match applications to the right delivery model. In some cases, it may be best to deploy in a public cloud. It other cases, it may be best to deploy in a private cloud. In yet other cases, the best model may be a mix of private and public cloud services, or a mix of traditional IT and private cloud. So you can see selecting a vendor that can help ensure your applications are deployed in the right deployment model, based on your business requirements, is critical.

This is where the HP Helion portfolio of products and services take shape. HP Helion is a portfolio of products and services that make it easier for you to build, manage and consume workloads in a Hybrid Cloud environment. HP Helion brings together all the benefits and agility of cloud computing, all the possibilities and interoperability of open source, and all the security and reliability enterprises need to move forward with confidence.

The point is, the value of cloud is real, but the real value and reality that lies ahead is in Hybrid Cloud. This is not based on a rip-and-replace plan. These hybrid computing architectures will need to be integrated with each other and with traditional IT. With our broad portfolio of products, solutions and services, from both HP and our partners, we can help you deploy a private cloud, managed private cloud, managed virtual private cloud and use public and SaaS services. All based on a common technology and OpenStack that makes it easier for you to deploy, manage and operate cloud applications. It is open and secure and enables organizations to be more agile. By open we mean it is based on open standards and built on open source to deliver fast innovation. This enables the ability to move, integrate and deliver applications across IT environments. By secure we mean you are safe in knowing that all products and services provide the visibility, control and governance you need across a hybrid environment. And by agile you get the fastest time to business outcome through the best economics across all delivery models and solutions.

Many of your existing applications will continue to run on traditional IT, but you may need to integrate new cloud applications with them. This is what we mean when we say IT will change from being a builder of services to becoming a broker of IT services. Now you can see why leading IT decision makers are thinking about Hybrid Cloud right now. They simply can’t wait.

If your interested is going a little deeper in the subject, I invite you to watch this video from HP Discover in June: Building real-world clouds: Nine lessons from the trenches and strategies for success. Bill Hilf, SVP of Product and Service Management, HP Cloud, talks about the future of cloud, the role of hybrid cloud in the New Style of IT, and nine real-world cloud learnings that will help you create the right cloud strategy for your enterprise.

We will be talking more about this over the coming months, but I hope this got you thinking.
