bryan.jpgIn my last post, I talked about how excited companies were at Discover Barcelona by the way HP OneView simplifies enterprise data center management. In this post, I’d like to focus on how that simplified management helps customers monitor less-complex data center environments. Designed with a consumer-inspired, user-friendly interface, HP OneView enables IT operators to deploy, migrate, troubleshoot and update infrastructure in minutes rather than hours, a big advantage when IT staff may be asked to wear many hats.

I recently spoke with a company that packages HP OneView with a solution for health services IT. The solution includes hardware, software and management tools to provide online backup to rack-mounted storage devices, including HP ProLiant DL380 servers and D6000 disk enclosures. The company needed a simple way for its customers to monitor the health of their systems and gain access to the management console to resolve any issues that may arise.

The company chose to bundle HP OneView because

  • The user-friendly interface of HP OneView makes it a snap for client IT operators to manage their environment efficiently and collaboratively, with no need for lengthy training sessions.
  • HP OneView dramatically simplifies infrastructure management by eliminating the need for many manual processes, so that even inexperienced IT operators can carry out routine maintenance tasks.
  • Client IT operators can monitor both servers and storage components in one integrated view.

IT operators quickly master consumer-style tools

So what is it that makes HP OneView so accessible? To begin with, HP OneView was designed with consumer applications in mind. Modeled after consumer mapping applications, the HP OneView Map View feature, for example, gives client IT operators a familiar interface to view the health, relationships and dependencies of their entire infrastructure. They use interactive links to click down on a particular resource, with all the resources hyperlinked together.

Other user-friendly features that helped health services IT staff get up to speed quickly include

  • Smart Search, a powerful search-and-retrieval engine with a Google-like interface that treats all data as flat
  • Activity feed that interleaves the tasks and alerts that occur in the environment for simple, consolidated view
  • Action menus that host all actions for a selected resource

To minimize distractions, HP OneView dedicates its screen display to just the content related to the task at hand. In addition, direct navigation lets IT operators use the fewest number of steps possible to access any item or perform any action.

IT staff collaborate to solve problems in real-time

IT operators keep tabs on the health of their system with real-time system alerts in an easy-to-decipher format. In order to resolve trouble spots as quickly as possible, IT operators can collaborate in real-time, so that they can solve problems as they crop up. Team members can assign tasks in a collaborative manner, so that every member of the team knows what the others are doing. Because of the HTML5 user interface, they can access HP OneView from their tablet or mobile device; they don’t even have to be in the data center to start troubleshooting.
