10g RAC on 11.31

Hello,
I erroneously posted this on the linux forum:

We are clean installing oracle 10g rac on two itanium blade servers, hp-ux 11.31. The installation goes on fine till the place to run root.sh on the first node where this error pops up

# sh /oracle/oraInventory/orainstRoot.sh

# sh /oracle/crs/root.sh

WARNING: directory '/oracle' is not owned by root

Checking to see if Oracle CRS stack is already configured

Setting the permissions on OCR backup directory

Setting up NS directories

PROT-1: Failed to initialize ocrconfig

Failed to upgrade Oracle Cluster Registry configuration

It seems oracle could not be able to write/open the OCR raw device that i specified as seen in the below log:

For the OCR, i specified the disks /dev/rdsk/c7t0d2 and /dev/rdsk/c7t1d0, and chowned these disks to root:dba, then chmod 660. The same disks are referrenced by alternate paths /dev/rdsk/c5t0d2 and /dev/rdsk/c5t1d0. I have multipathing, and the disks are from EVA5000 presented to both servers.

My most likely guess is that the installer needs to know of one logical path that represents the two paths to the same device, so that in the OUI, i will give these path? is that possible with mknod. If my assumption is wrong, what could be the likely cause of this issue?

thank, kind regards

Re: 10g RAC on 11.31

Daniel,

I don't know what your specific problem here is, but I *can* tell you that you have a bigger problem anyway.

You are running an unsupported storage configuration.

HP-UX11.31 does not support the EVA5000 running v3.x of VCS as it is an Active/Passive array. From your ioscan it's obvious that you're running v3.x as the devices are reported as HSV110 rather than HSV111 they would be with VCS 4.x.

So I hope you can get your EVA5K upgraded to A/A firmware or this is going to be a non-starter for you. If you have existing systems attached to the EVA5K this is a non-trivial upgrade as it changes the entire array from Active/Passive to Active/Active.

After you've upgraded and presented storage you should see persistent device files for the vdisks in /dev/disk

Read up on the new IO stack for 11.31 here:

Re: 10g RAC on 11.31

You're other option is to downgrade the servers to 11.23 and use Secure Path for Active/Passive arrays (if you don't own that its charged per server)

Hi Duncan,

Thank you very much for your input, am still going through the docs in the link you posted, in order to evaluate the options we have.

Re: 10g RAC on 11.31

Hi Duncan,

We managed to do the installation after we presented the disks from EVA4000 which supports active/active.

thanks again.
