A question for DBAs: What's your opinion

We are evaluating a product from Quest Software called LiveReorg. (For Oracle databases). The product helps perform a database reorg without shutdown or taking the table/tablespace offline. This significantly improves performance and reduces wastes blocks in a tablespace. The number of extents drops down to 1,2,3,4 or the number you choose. instead of those 100s on one tablespace. We had a chance to do it live on a test server and looks great. Although it was difficult to reorg a whole tablespace since it needs twice the size (in the same location)!! But the work around is to reorg on another location or file system then drop the old one.

What do you think? What should watch out for?

(Env. SAP R/3 on Oracle 8.1.7.4 and HP-UX 11.0)

Hi,

I've read the doc on LiveReorg some time ago. It seems to be a damn nice toy, but rather expensive.

But you can also find documents on the net "stop reorganizing and start living". Oracle 8i and above can handle 10000 extents per segment without performance loss if you use reasonable extents (> 1MB).

Thierry.

Re: A question for DBAs: What's your opinion

At one of the Oracle world or IOUG white papers i read that This is a myth
"lots of extents for a table is bad for performance"
and its false.
Anyway Quest tools were always good,do you have the test sheet and result found fine ?

Re: A question for DBAs: What's your opinion

Hi Kalid,

I would suggest you to use locally mananged tablespaces LMTs and forget reorgs with respect to shrinking number of extents and start living! Besides, oracle 9i has online data reorg and redefinition package, where you can move things online without any downtime. why would anyone want to buy a feature that is available on the next release. If you think you would be doing reorg too often, then this could justify for your migration to 9i.

It sounds wonderful.

I would suggest extensive testing on a sandbox system to make sure it doesn't mess anything up.

Then reorg during maintenance windows right after cold backups until its proven istelf.

Re: A question for DBAs: What's your opinion

Hello,

We have an identical environment to yours and we have LiveReorg. I am strictly the HPUX admin, but the two Oracle/SAP guys are very very happy with LiveReorg. We are a very very conservative shop since we support our worldwide operations, so they probably do not use the product to it's full potential. We have had it installed now for probably about a year and they have performed quite a few reorgs on our productioin system. I beleive they installed and tested the product on our test systems for about six months before even considering it for our production boxes.

Hope this helps!

We've used LiveReorg for about three years+ on our ERP system and it has performed flawlessly. We typically run it once per week.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: A question for DBAs: What's your opinion

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

Thierry: I did read the document. When I joined the team here the system was in a different state. The document was supposed to be considered during the implementation├в ┬ж

Hari: No I didn├в t get any test sheets but we manually chose some tables to work on. We tried small tables such as 2MB to large such 2 GB and 3 GB. Results are great.

Stan: in an SAP environment, we stick to what SAP recommends.

Steven: Good idea. The first re-orgs will be during weekends and after backups are done.

Bryan: We had about 4 months now evaluating this product. May it├в s time to go Live now!!

Clay: Good idea also, having LiveReorg run frequently reduces fragmentation and keeps performance up to expectations.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. More are we
