Cobol - Copy or Re-Install

Hi,

A dumb question....
I??m migrating a HPUX Box (E35 to D270 - both with HPUX 10.20) in the E35 have a HP Cobol.
Question: I??ll need re-install the Cobol into D270 or just copy the /opt/cobol to D270??

It??s works??

Re: Cobol - Copy or Re-Install

No Question is actually dumb ...

No, you'll need to re-install it. You will find that some applications place their files in more than one location, particularly logs.
Very safe and clean method.

Re: Cobol - Copy or Re-Install

Mich is right.

Any software places its files in multiple locations some configuration files in /var and /etc.

The best way is to re-install the application.

Re: Cobol - Copy or Re-Install

Hi,

Tts always a best practice to do a fresh install when we move to different servers with different operating system version.

Software installation installs the software and does the necessary configuration and creates links to other paths, which we will be missing when we copy the software directory alone. We had experienced once, where the application initially worked (basic), when we copied the software files across, but when there were other cases to test the application failed complaining "not found" / "not defined". We had to remove the software and re-install it. Now it works

Also, depending on what version of COBOL you have you may need to get a new license.dat file.

With all HP languages it's best to reintall instead of just copying the files.

Re: Cobol - Copy or Re-Install

We use Cobol ourselves both supplied direct from HP and also direct from MicroFocus. Both versions keep all the required files with the /opt/cobol directory so in theory can be copied, but I would always re-install if using HP's as it then shows when performing the swlist command. I believe that if you just copy, any patches released in the future would not install as it would not recogize it had the base product installed.

Re: Cobol - Copy or Re-Install

hi,

It is advisable to go for re-installation, since this will minimise possible bugs or crashes due to change in underlying hardware/OS. Although, the copy solution might work for ever that is also the risk that after some days/months you start experiencing strange behaviours.

here, we prefer to recompile even our runtimes during deployment on our server even though both are identical (OS/Hardware).

hope this helps!
