I want your help for setting up the DR. We are having 5 production servers. One is the database server for SAP. And remaining 4 servers are SAP application server. Running OS HP-UX 11i, Oracle DB 10.2.0.2 and SAP ECC6.0. We are having the 30MB of bandwidth between two sites. I want to know what setup will be the best for DR with very cost effective solution. My company donтАЩt want to go for Hardware level for e.g. we have EMC Clariion Storage at one side and company donтАЩt want to buy another storage and do the replication at storage level. Can anybody will suggest me with DR plan to go how about which software replication tool will be the best for our setup. And at the same time a cost effective solution.
Thanks,
Narendra

SolutionThe starting point for any DR design is determining the Recovery Time Objective and Recovery Point Objective - thats how long can you afford to wait to recover, and how much data can you afford to lose. Without those numbers its difficult to know what sort if DR solution would work.
A couple of points on the data you have provided.
i) Are you sure your bandwidth is 30MB/s (mega-bytes per second), and not 30Mb/s (mega-bits per second). Given the difference is a factor of 8 its quite importnat to get that right. Also is that the actual measured throughput or just the nominal bandwidth of the circuit?
ii) If you want to go down the software only route, you're probably looking at Oracle Dataguard - even that can cost a fair bit when you consider the extra Oracle licenses you require.

Re: DR Setup
With that much bandwidth you could use oracle streams or dataguard to replicate your data hot tot he DR site.
You could maintain just enough infrastructure to run your operation. A database server and one or two application servers.
I'd need to know what you believe is cost effective. If you can afford that much bandwidth, you can probably afford the servers.

Re: DR Setup
As you said the Oracle Dataguard will be the best software solution can you please breif or share some documents how to implement the same.
Thanks

Re: DR Setup
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/toc.htm
And at the Dataguard broker manual:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14230/toc.htm
There will no doubt be some SAP OSS notes on Dataguard as well - you should check and review those first, as it may be that not all Dataguard features are supported with SAP.

Re: DR Setup
Thanks a lot for your information provided but before i start the ground work before choosing the best software solution for DR.Which software you recommeded me to explore Oracle Dataguard or Oracle streams. As our setup of SAP server is not that much complex it is very simple setup of one DB server(only one DB instance running) for backened database and 4 SAP application server. And one question which of the above software will be the best for if Production goes down and DR comes up. And later on when Production come up how we can replicate the data from DR to production. As of cost concern there is no problem to invest on software replication tool which is the best and easy to handle in disaster happen. But my company wants to go with software replication tool only.
Thanks,
Narendra

Re: DR Setup
You may also look into Quest Software Shareplex for replication solutions.
Although, if you have enough resources, you should try to implement the data guard solution.
Unfortunately, we cannot give you a detailed description of the steps to be carried out to achieve your goal.
good luck!
kind regards

Re: DR Setup
I don't think you have that much choice - I don't think SAP supports Oracle streams.
Consider with Dataguard that all redo is sent to the remote site. So look at the amount of archived redo you produce on your busiest days, and make sure you can send that much data up your pipe in a similar amount of time.
